December 2022 (1)

Dear SLICE friends

Following up on a solicitation from me, Robert McKenzie kindly sends us fellow Slicers, an update from his Speaking of Prejudice project.

Publication/media stuff

1.  New monograph: McKenzie, R.M. and A. McNeill (2023) Implicit and Explicit Language Attitudes: Mapping linguistic prejudice and attitude change in England. London/New York; Routledge.

2. Fortunately received a lot of media attention from the study results within UK newspapers (The Guardian), radio and TV, e.g.

The solicitation/invitation to use SLICE News this way goes for all of us, of course. It has been expressed before, and I am happy to repeat it here.

In order to lead by example, I immodestly include reference to a relatively recent article, Destandardization (chapter 25), that may be of interest to some of you; it includes the kind of comparison of Denmark and Norway that was behind the distinction between destandardisation and demotisation that has been a theme in much SLICE work, and some discussion of these notions (feel free to ask me to send a copy if you don’t have access).

Let me also draw your attention to a newly published volume on Research Methods in Language Attitudes - Research Methods in Language Attitudes.

In these pre-Xmas times we just today got our first snow here in Copenhagen and temperatures well below zero degree Celsius. So I finish by sending the best wishes for the coming weeks and the new year. May we all live in peace!

Tore
